Rome and the Roman Castles Area

A naturalistic, historical, artistic, religious and gastronomic itinerary among the most interesting, mysterious and mythological areas in Italy.

The importance of the whole area of the “Castelli Romani” is due to its valuable landscapes, its history, its culture, its nature – all unique in Italy. Our aim is to honour and promote all the resources the “Roman castles area” has to offer to the many foreign and Italian visitors who arrive in these magical places day after day.

Rich and interesting flora and fauna
The fauna of the Roman Castles is still very rich and extremely interesting. Among the many mammals living in the area, the fox, porcupine, hedgehog and squirrel are present. On the fertile soils of the Alban Hills, rigorous vegetation grows, having been studied by botanists for a long period of time. The woodlands are predominantly made up of oak, holm-oak, beech and other species. The most striking of those planted by man are the pine and chestnut. The flowers include the cyclamen, anemone, narcissus poeticus, wild orchid and pond lily.
From Neanderthal man to the city of Latin people
The work of archeologists has confirmed that Alba Longa really existed, and that the civilization of the Latin peoples was of a noteworthy level. The fertile hills of this area have been populated by man ever since Prehistoric times. Neanderthal man settled here permanently between the modern centres of Castel Gandolfo and Albano, living off hunting wild boar, deer and Elephas antiqus(the straight-tusked elephant). However, we can speak of a real civilization from the VI millennium B.C., when the first Neolithic farmers settled in the area of what are nowadays called Albano, Grottaferrata and Montecòmpatri. The civilization of the Latin people emerges from the IX century B.C., and is divided into three ages: Albana, Romulea and Orientalizing, according to historians. This population accomplished elegant works of art, having contact with Greeks, Etruscans and other peoples of the Mediterranean. Their sanctuaries: Juno Sospita in Lanuvio, Jupiter of Lazio on Monte Cavo, Diana of Nemi near the lake of the same name, all of whom passed on their sacredness to the Romans.

THE ALBAN HILLS AREA "CASTELLI ROMANI"

The Alban hills are an impressive volcano in central Italy, located between the calcareous reliefs of the Apeninnines ( Pranestine and Lepini mountains) and Tyrrhenian coast.
Immediately to the north is the city of Rome, which owes part its history, or at least part of its architecture, to the volcanic  nature of the area.
In the area are located  16 typical villages called "Castelli Romani"(Albano, Ariccia, Castelgandolfo, Colonna, Frascati, Genzano di Roma, Grottaferrata, Lanuvio, Marino, Montecompatri, Monteporzio Catone, Nemi, Rocca di Papa, Rocca Priora, Lariano, Velletri)offering visitors the chance to appreciate the ancient and fascinating history, with important traces dating from centuries before the birth of Rome.
When modern-day Romans visit the Castelli Romani, it is above all for the fresh air, the views ,the excellent cuisine and famous DOC wines like Frascati, Marino, Colli Albani, Colli Lanuvini, Montecompatri and Velletri.

Alban Hills's Regional Park

Alban Hills's Regional Park

This protected area is part of the large Latium park system, which manages all the of the state protected zones in the region, 54 in total.
The park features an environment rich in mixed forests, with groves of turkey oak and chestnut, wich have replaced the large forest of beech that covered these montains until the eighteenth century.
The fertility of the land and the hmidid climate allow for an abundance of vegetation.
Holly, linden, hazelnut, maple, hornbeam and clematis can be found here.
Mount Cavo still maintains a significant popolation of beech.
The park also offers facilities for resting, set in strategic locations, a dense network of trails that include an educational path along the shore of Lake Albano, an aviary for rare birds, and  a pond used for teaching purposes. It's also possible to take a numerous guided tours.
The work conducted by the park has fostered the return of animals that had forsaken the territory, including the badger, marten, peregrine falcon, spectacled salamander and many species of bats.
The enhancement of biodiversity has supported the return of these mountains of a timid species like the wolf.
